Pet Photography Workshop
We couldn’t help ourselves.. We had to host a Pet Photography Workshop when our friend and nationally known speaker Robert Trawick said he would be in town. Why Pets? Ummm.. maybe our motivation had something to do with the fact that at Christmas time we added a new puppy to our very own family. Cash is a Jack Russell and is just 12 weeks old and is such a ham for the camera.
Pet Photography has been growing in popularity for years. People consider pets part of their family, so if you are doing professional work at all, chances are you’ve been asked to photograph someones pet at one time or another. But even if you aren’t fond of pets or that type of work, or you believe its just not that hard to get a dog to look at you and “smile” when you are behind a camera, you soon discovered this class was way more than a Pet Photography Workshop…
Whenever Robert Trawick is leading a class, the subject matter is first and foremost LIGHTING. Lighting is key to good photography and is what sets professionals apart from so many others. It just so happens this time our model was a handsome little pup.
The workshop started out with how to set up studio lighting for pet photography. For the first part of the workshop, Robert used the Interfit S1 for the main light source, modified by an Interfit soft box. Interfit lights were also used for the fill light and for the light on the background.
Robert also covered posing and worked with Cash on a table so that he could easily contain him, making for a smooth photo session. Robert covered the 5 things you must know in order to be successful with pets.
After a brief halftime break for our little model, we changed directions and and started talking about Fusion Photography. Robert combined ambient light with flash to create some unique lighting techniques in the studio. Suddenly our Pet Photography Workshop turned into a FUSION lighting workshop. You never know what’s going to happen at one of our workshops! One of the things we pride ourselves in, is going with the flow of the class. Though our model was a pet, the nature of our class can go in any direction depending on the students in attendence.
The tools used to create this Fusion Light was once again the Interfit S1 with Interfit softbox , the XP PhotoGear LiteShaper Strip, and the Savage RGB Wand. Here are some images from that part of the workshop.
We so appreciate Robert and Teri Trawick from Trawick Images coming down this past weekend to lead a Lighting Workshop over Pet Photography. It was so fun and Cash is hooked already on a future modeling career.
If you have any questions about coming to one of our workshops in the future, or would like to tell us what you are most interested in learning, just drop us an email. We’d love to hear from you.
Happy Shooting!
